What better way to experience the Isle of Man than by vintage ‘Railway’? Over 40 miles of lovingly restored steam and electric railway take you on an unforgettable journey to some of the most beautiful and historic places on the Island.

‘The Ultimate Driving Experience’ throughout April and May 2010.

The new event, operating on the Island’s Heritage Railways, will give members of the public a chance to experience driving one of the Island’s historic Electric Trams. Each experience will be run over a full day and will include safety briefings, a history of the trams, theory information and ultimately the chance to drive one of the trams between Laxey and Ramsey.

As there are limited dates available bookings will be made on a first come first served basis. The total cost is £300, (or £350 with an accompanying guest).  Please direct all bookings to Marieanne Bridges, Marieanne.bridges@gov.im or telephone her on 01624 697419.

Special Events During 2010

Tramway Gathering 21-23 September

Click on the event to find out more information and for details of ferry and accommodation packages specific to these events.

Groudle Glen Railway

The Groudle Glen Railway is operated entirely by volunteers and owned by the 'Isle of Man Steam Railway Supporters' Association'. It is a true narrow gauge railway, originally built in the 1890's.

Horse Trams

A colourful summer sight on the Promenade since 1876, this sedate mode of transport is a testimony to Victorian engineering and endurance - and just as popular with today's visitors.

Manx Electric Railway

The Manx Electric Tramway is a unique vintage railway aged over 100 years old. Open and closed tramcars takes passengers on an unforgettable journey along the east coast from Ramsey to Douglas, via Laxey.

Snaefell Mountain Railway

Over 100 year old Electric mountain railway running from Laxey to the summit of Snaefell at 2,036ft. The line is five miles (8 km) long, built to 3 ft 6 in (1067 mm) gauge and uses a Fell centre rail for braking on the steep gradients.

Steam Railway

Opened in 1874, this 3ft narrow gauge railway still runs with its original locomotives and carriages, through an ever changing countryside, to a choice of destinations in the south of the Island.
